The New Canaan public school system is considered to be one of the best in Connecticut. Nationally, Forbes ranked New Canaan’s public school system third in the country for communities with a median home price of $800,000. The school district encompasses West, South and East Elementary Schools, Saxe Middle School and New Canaan High School. The New Canaan school system is also notable for its achievements in extracurricular activities, including athletics and drama. In 2012, the Wall Street Journal ranked New Canaan as the 8th wealthiest school district in the United States. Town Highlights
New Canaan consists of 22.5 square miles and has a population of 20,000. With a focus on community, activities include the Annual Summer Vintage Fair and Sidewalk Sales – a 45 year old event that continues to bring out the entire town – dazzling fireworks at Waveny Park on the Fourth of July, the Halloween Parade, and the Holiday Stroll, which has now been implemented as monthly Stroll Evening creating a block party 12 times a year. One of the wealthiest towns in America, New Canaan is also notable for housing one of the most significant collections of mid-century modern homes. Echoing the “Harvard Five” – architects who changed the course of modern home design – New Canaan boasts such iconic residences as the Philip Johnson Glass House and the Landis Gore House. Other points of interest in New Canaan include New Canaan Nature Center, the Silvermine Arts Center and John Rogers Studio.
Commuting
New Canaan commuters enjoy the option of two Metro North railroad stations: the New Canaan station and the Talmadge Hill station.
